Change of Plans

When planning travel around the world, sacrifices must be made.  Unfortunately I already have to make one.  I’m postponing my travel until April or May 2013.  Since it’s hard finding a job, I will unlikely make my goal date of January 2013.  However if I am able to change the date back I will.  If you know any ways to make more money please let me know.  I’m currently selling most of my belongings so if you are interested in purchasing anything please let me know and I’ll post the links.  I’ll probably post them anyways. 🙂

Making Money on the Road

Before I start traveling I have made the decision to apply for a Working Holiday Visa in Australia. This allows me to work in Australia for 12 months, staying up to 6 months with each employer. But I will not be using this visa just to work. I’ll probably just get a part-time job and will spend most of it traveling Australia. Since I think exploring Australia will take longer than 3 months (because I want to take my time) I’m applying for this visa.

I also know that the cost of living in Australia is very high. or at least higher than Toronto, so that’s why it’s logical to work and earn money to stay in a more expensive country. After working here for 6 months, I will use the money I earned to travel more.

While in Australia I plan to keep my expenses at the bare minimum, meaning I’m going to have to make sacrifices to the way I usually spend money and live. I’ll probably share a room with someone so that my rent is a lot lower than if I had my own apartment. But like a normal girl, I know that there are always unexpected times when I’m going to have to spend money.

I want to try to start working in April, that way I would be working during the colder months and by the time my 6 months are up I’ll be traveling and it will be warmer. This is the plan I’m going for… Hopefully it all works out.

Planning Iceland

Starting From:
Toronto, ON     Airport: YYZ

Flying to:
Reykjavik, Iceland

So this is going to be my first stop around the world. I am doing extensive research in what to do, weather conditions, prices and currency, places to stay, and how to get around.

Since I’m going in the winter, most tourist attractions will be closed due to high-season not starting until July. Fortunately the things I want to do will still be available.

While I’m in Iceland I only want to accomplish a few things including hiking a glacier, seeing the northern lights, touring the Golden Circle, and going to the Blue Lagoon. Since it is only one small stop on my trip, I don’t want to spend a lot of money here. I want to save for the countries with a higher cost of living. I’ll be taking public transit when getting around Reykjavik but I might rent a car for a day or go places with tours depending on what’s cheaper.

I don’t know anyone from Iceland so I’ll be using CouchSurfing to find someone I can stay with or I will be staying at a hostel. Once I make money and plan what’s coming next I’ll post my “schedule”. I but schedule in quotations because nothing I’m doing is going to be set in stone. I know things will come up but I will probably have my first few weeks planned just so my family knows what I’m doing and has time to get comfortable with me traveling alone.

If you know anything to do in Iceland let me know! I’m very interested!

It’s Decided

So I have decided where I am going to start my journey!! After carefully mapping out prices of flights and what would cost me the smallest amount but still be somewhere I want to go, a decision has been made.

I’m starting in ICELAND! So some of you are probably like, why in God’s name would you want to go to Iceland and in the winter, no less? Well I want to start crossing things off my bucket list and the one I’ll cross off here is Hike a Glacier…and See the Northern Lights, hopefully!

Well…that’s it.  I’m starting in around 7 months!  How exciting is that?  Now if someone will hire me so I can start making some money!

Step One: Where to Go

There are 196 independent countries in the world, so how do you decide where to go when you’re planning a trip around the world? I don’t believe there is an easy way to do this without doing the research first, but I’m going to do it!

Starting out I went to the dollar store and got a notebook. It isn’t fancy just a book with lined paper in it. I wrote all down all the countries in the world, alphabetically. Then I went through them and highlighted all the countries I want to visit without doing research.

From all the countries, the countries I want to visit are:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Egypt
  • England
  • Ethiopia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Great Britain
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • India
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Jordan
  • Kenya
  • Liechtenstein
  • Luxembourg
  • Madagascar
  • Maldives
  • Monaco
  • Morocco
  • The Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Northern Ireland
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Scotland
  • South Africa
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Tanzania
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine
  • United Kingdom
  • Vatican City
  • Wales

Now I know getting to all these countries with a minimum amount of money is unrealistic but this is my starting point.  From here I will do research on each country.  Things to research are cost of living, safety, things to do, etc.  Step 2 is coming up Saturday.
